Honest overview

Ylläs is genuinely
underrated. Here's
why most people miss it.

Last updated March 2026 — flights verified for winter 2025–26 season

Ylläs sits in the same region as Levi — both served by Kittilä Airport (KTT), both accessible on the same direct European flights. The difference is atmosphere. Where Levi has developed into a well-known resort with all the infrastructure that comes with it, Ylläs has stayed quieter, more local, less packaged.

Finland's highest fell at 718m. 63 ski runs — more than Levi. Over 330km of cross-country trails, widely regarded as the best in Finnish Lapland. A fraction of Levi's visitor numbers.

"Ylläs is the answer if you want what Levi offers — same flights, same region, same winter — but without the resort feeling. The cross-country skiing here is exceptional and the crowds simply aren't there."

Who Ylläs is NOT right for: Travellers who want a buzzing resort atmosphere with bars, restaurants and après-ski. Families who need the most convenient logistics — the transfer from KTT is 45–60 minutes rather than Levi's 15. And if you're flying from one of the airports without direct KTT routes, Ylläs adds extra complexity.

Via Helsinki (HEL)

Train to Kolari Kolari railway station is 30km from Ylläs — closer than to Levi. The overnight train from Helsinki to Kolari connects with buses to Ylläs. A genuinely scenic option if you're not in a rush.
What's worth doing

Activities — what Ylläs
does better than anywhere

Cross-country skiing through Lapland forest — Ylläs trails
The best in Finnish Lapland
Cross-country skiing

330km of trails across open fell and through old-growth forest. This is the best cross-country terrain in the region — dramatic, varied, and without the crowds. 28km are illuminated for night skiing. The trails link Ylläs to Äkäslompolo village through pristine wilderness.

If cross-country skiing is why you're going to Lapland, Ylläs is the answer.
Ski slopes at Finnish fell resort — downhill skiing Lapland
More than you'd expect
Downhill skiing

63 slopes on Finland's highest fell at 718m. More runs than Levi, with good variety for all levels. The ski school is well-regarded. Quieter pistes mean shorter lift queues — a significant practical advantage over Levi in peak season.

Better value in peak season than Levi — fewer people on the same quality snow.
Aurora borealis northern lights in Finnish Lapland
Good odds here too
Northern lights

Ylläs sits at a similar latitude to Levi with less light pollution. The open fell terrain gives an unobstructed northern horizon — ideal for aurora viewing. A guided snowmobile hunt away from any village lights is the best approach.

Similar odds to Levi, less light pollution, better natural viewing conditions.
What to avoid

Two things to know
before you book Ylläs

1
Expecting Levi's resort atmosphere

Ylläs is quieter by design. The village is smaller, the après-ski is calmer, the bustle is absent. Some people find this a relief. If you want a lively resort with restaurants, bars and a social atmosphere, Levi is the better answer.

Go to Levi if a resort atmosphere matters. Go to Ylläs if you want the same region without it.
2
Underestimating the transfer time

The transfer from Kittilä Airport to Ylläs is 45–60 minutes — three to four times longer than Levi's 15-minute bus ride. With young children or heavy ski equipment this is a meaningful difference. Plan for it.

Hire a car at the airport. Book accommodation that offers transfers if you're flying with young children and lots of kit.
Common questions

Questions about Ylläs —
answered honestly

Is Ylläs or Levi better?+
It depends on what you want. Ylläs is better if: cross-country skiing is a priority, you want fewer crowds, you prefer a quieter and more local atmosphere. Levi is better if: you want no hire car, you want a buzzing resort with more infrastructure, or the 15-minute airport bus matters to you. Both use Kittilä Airport and have the same direct European flights.
Do I need a hire car for Ylläs?+
Yes — strongly recommended. Unlike Levi where the airport bus takes you to the resort in 15 minutes, Ylläs is 45–60 minutes from Kittilä Airport and there is no regular bus service connecting them. Some accommodation offers transfers — check when you book. A hire car gives you flexibility to explore the wider area including Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
What is Ylläs best known for?+
Three things: Finland's highest fell at 718m, exceptional cross-country skiing (330km of trails), and a quieter atmosphere than Levi. It's less commercially developed than Levi and has more of a local character. Serious cross-country skiers often prefer it to anywhere else in Finnish Lapland.
What flights go to Ylläs?+
Ylläs uses Kittilä Airport (KTT) — the same airport as Levi. All direct European routes to KTT work for Ylläs. These include: London Gatwick and Manchester (easyJet/TUI), Amsterdam (KLM/TUI), Paris (Air France/Transavia), Frankfurt (Discover Airlines — year-round), Munich (Lufthansa), Düsseldorf and Berlin (Eurowings), Zurich (Edelweiss/Helvetic) and Vienna (Austrian Airlines). The difference is the ground transfer — 45–60 minutes to Ylläs rather than 15 minutes to Levi.
