Every destination in Finnish Lapland is genuinely good. The question is which one suits your specific situation — where you're flying from, what you want to do, who you're travelling with. Here's the one-line honest answer for each.

Levi
Best for: direct flights, no hire car, skiing, resort feel. Our home.
Rovaniemi
Best for: widest flight choice, Santa experience, first-timers, families.
Saariselkä
Best for: northern lights priority, genuine wilderness, serious aurora hunters.
Ylläs
Best for: cross-country skiing, quieter alternative to Levi, fewer crowds.
Levi ski resort at night — floodlit slopes in Finnish Lapland

01
Levi
Finland's best-connected ski resort

Levi is the most practical Lapland destination for most European travellers. Direct flights land at Kittilä Airport — 15 minutes from the resort by free bus. No hire car needed. Finland's largest ski resort, voted best in the country multiple times. 590,000 skier days in 2024–25 — an all-time record.

Airport: Kittilä (KTT)
Transfer: 15 min, no car needed
Latitude: 67.8°N
Slopes: 43 ski runs
"We live in Levi and would still recommend it honestly — best access, best resort infrastructure, no hire car. But it is a resort. Go knowing that."

Northern lights aurora over Lapland landscape — Rovaniemi Finnish Lapland
Arctic Circle
02
Rovaniemi
The gateway — most flights, widest choice

Rovaniemi is right on the Arctic Circle and has more direct flight connections than any other Lapland destination — 38 international airports in winter 2025–26. Best for first-timers, families wanting the Santa experience, and travellers from airports without direct Levi routes. Hire car recommended to get the most from it.

Airport: Rovaniemi (RVN)
Transfer: 10 min to city
Direct routes: 38 airports
Hire car: Recommended
"We send many families to Rovaniemi — especially those from smaller UK airports, or families where Santa is the priority. Just skip the airport village."

Aurora borealis northern lights — Saariselkä Finnish Lapland
Best aurora odds
03
Saariselkä
Wilder, darker, further north

260km above the Arctic Circle — the furthest north of all four destinations. The best northern lights odds in Finnish Lapland, genuine wilderness, and access to the Sámi cultural heartland at Inari. Less commercial than Levi or Rovaniemi. For people who mean it. Fly into Ivalo (IVL), 30 minutes north.

Airport: Ivalo (IVL)
Transfer: 30 min south
Latitude: 68.4°N
Aurora odds: Best in Finland
"If northern lights are the reason you're going — genuinely the reason — Saariselkä gives you the best odds. Come in January or February, not November."

Cross-country skiing through pine forest — Ylläs Finnish Lapland
The quiet one
04
Ylläs
Finland's highest fell — half the crowds

Ylläs is Levi's underrated neighbour — same Kittilä Airport, same direct European flights, but quieter, more local and with better cross-country skiing. Finland's highest fell at 718m, 63 ski runs, 330km of cross-country trails. For travellers who want what Levi offers in atmosphere, but without the resort crowd.

Airport: Kittilä (KTT)
Transfer: 45–60 min
Fell height: 718m
XC trails: 330km
"Same flights as Levi, a third of the visitors. If you want to ski or cross-country without the busy resort atmosphere, this is the answer."
